Kristina's Top 3 Romantic Comedies
So I'm starting a new segment on the blog - Three on Thursday - in which I'll tell you three of my favorite things...and you get to weigh in. Tell me what you love (or hate) about my list, add your own must-haves...and now, the inaugural Three on Thursday: Kristina's Top 3 Romantic Comedies:
3) Fool's Gold (2008) - Kate Hudson (Tess) and Matthew McConaughey (Finn). On a beach. Plenty of man-candy, very quippy dialogue and sex in a church. Seriously, do we need anything else? Did I mention Matthew-of-the-nice-chest? Or the beach? Or the hunt for a lost treasure and the wonderful way that story was told, which just highlighted the ways Tess and Finn were perfect for one another? Yeah, this is definitely a keeper movie.
2) Runaway Bride (1999) - Julia Roberts (Maggie) and Richard Gere (Ike) with probably the best best-friend actress evah, Joan Cusack (Peggy). I love her, she totally stole the movie for me...but I digress, this is a list of my three favorite rom-coms, not my three favorite scene stealers. Don't worry, Joan, I'll get ya back. I love this movie for a lot of reason, not the least of which is that Maggie and Ike ride off into the sunset on their own horses. Or that she has that line, "I'm turning in my running shoes. To you." Oh, happy sigh.
1) Philadelphia Story (1940) - Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart and Cary Grant...do I really need to say anything more? Three of my favorite actors in one place with a helluva story to tell. There's the socialite (Tracy, played by Katherine) who's about to get married only her ex (Dex, played by Cary) shows up and there's this reporter (Mike, played by Jimmy Stewart)who keeps getting in the way of everything. There are great one-liners, amazing on-screen chemistry and acting that...will floor you. If you haven't seen it, Netflix it. It's really worth it.
So, what would you add to the list? What are some must-see-again-and-again romantic comedies?

Love the new segment, Kristi.
ReplyDeleteNot so much Runaway Bride or Philadelphia Story, but I'm definitely with you on Fool's Gold. Great story, great chemistry, just a feel-good fun movie.
Fool's Gold doesn't get enough respect, I don't think. It's a really great flick! Thanks for stopping in!
DeleteLove "Philadelphia Story," "Pretty Woman," and--not sure if it qualifies as comedy, "An Affair to Remember." I think it's the most romantic EVER!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, an Affair to Remember...love that one. I call it a drama...but we'll add it in. :)
DeleteWouldn't be any of my picks for romantic comedies. I have a new favorite. This Mean's War is a fantastic romantic comedy with some great shot'm up action. I love Maid of Honor and It's Complicated.
ReplyDeleteThose are great choices, too, Jerri! Loved Maid of Honor!!
DeleteGreat choices! Especially the Philadelphia Story. "C K Dexter Haaaaveeeenn." And the hiccups between Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart.
ReplyDeleteAnd Joan Cusak is fabulous. Love her.
I loved Maid of Honor!!!, I can't pick only 3, but I've tried:
ReplyDelete1) 10 Things I Hate About You (fantastic movie with Heath Ledger...miss him!)
2) Just Friends
3) Friends with Benefits
This was fun...makes me want to watch all these again...thanks!
I'm a sucker for While You Were Sleeping, with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. Can't think of any more right now...
ReplyDeleteYES! How could I forget that. One of my all-time favorites. I also LOVE The Truth about Cats and Dogs. And, if we're going to go way back, ALL Doris Day movies, especially with Rock Hudson. Well, she made a few serious ones, but I mean her romantic comedies. She and Rock certainly had chemistry, especially considering it turns out he was gay.
DeleteThe Truth About Cats and Dogs! I LOVED that movie!
DeleteYoung Frankenstein - would that qualify??
ReplyDeleteBird on a Wire (Mel Gibson/Goldie Hawn)
Bridget Jones's Diary
Any movie that makes me laugh is #1 in my book.
Bird on a Wire is so fun, Sheri! Thanks for joining in!
DeleteGreat choices!
ReplyDeleteOverboard with Goldie Hawn.
The sleeping one with Sandra Bullock.
and,
Sixteen Candles!
16 Candles - LOVE that one..and Pretty in Pink, too...
DeleteWhile You Were Sleeping... probably on my top 10.
DeleteSleepless in Seattle
Overboard
10 Ways to lose a Guy.
And all the Doris Day/Rock Hudson flicks! Yay, thanks Alicia!
Okay, if we're going to go way, way back (The Philadelphia Story), I must add Bringing Up Baby. Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant at their best. And of course, Tootsie.
ReplyDeleteI never got into Tootsie, Callie...but Bringing up Baby - that's one fine film!!
DeleteOverboard and When Harry Met Sally!
ReplyDeleteOh, Overboard...love an amnesiac storyline, Carol!
DeleteDon't know Fool's Gold, but will need to check it out (literally, from the video store:)). Runaway Bride is okay, but my picks are:
ReplyDeleteBridget Jones's Diary (Colin Firth, yum!)
French Kiss
When Harry Met Sally
Okay, I may have to turn in my Girl Card. I like the ending of BJD - when she realizes Mark is The One. But all the waffling about Hugh Grant's character kind of made me crazy. Especially by the second one. Colin Firth is definitly YUM, though!
DeletePretty Woman
ReplyDeleteSabrina (The one with Harrison Ford)
Pretty Woman...*sigh* when we first saw a chemistry between Julia and Richard. Love that one...and Sabrina, too.
DeleteHere's one, a western called "Going South" with Jack Nicolson. And of course "Gone with the Wind" and my all time favorite "As good as it Gets." Great post, lots of romantic movies.
ReplyDelete: )
Love GWTW, Teresa...but it's more drama, to me. Thanks for adding it in.
DeleteI love, love, love romantic comedies! Everyone has already mentioned some good ones. I think some of my favorite newer ones are The Ugly Truth and Just Go With It. There are far too many to list, though!
ReplyDeleteWe saw Just Go With It over the winter - very funny!!
DeleteMy all time favorites are Serindipity, Overboard, and When Harry Met Sally. I watch all of them when they come on tv. Bought the When Harry Met Sally DVD.
ReplyDeleteOh, Harry and Sally...love friends-to-lovers stories!!!
DeleteOh I think you nailed it Kristi!
ReplyDelete*bows* glad you like my choices, Calisa!
DeleteI agree, great new segment. I'm going with "Life As We Knew It," with Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, and, let's not forget, the adorable Josh Lucas. I wish I were forced to choose between those two! Then, gotta go with the classic, "Pretty in Pink." Had a thing for Andrew McCarthy and who could forget Ducky (Jon Cryer) and his seeing Molly Ringwald at the dance (plus, the funny, off-beat character that Annie Potts did so beautifully. Remember how she fell in love with the preppie at the end?) *sigh* And rounding out the top 3, "The Wedding Date," Dermot Mulroney, Debra Messing, and Amy Adams. The scene at the end when she's on the phone with Dermot Mulroney and he says something like, "I bet you're tapping your fingernails as we speak, sitting in that awful purple dress--" and she says, "Wait! I never told you I was wearing purple." And her eyes begin to scan the room. GREAT scene. Still gives me shivers. And the cool part is, it's not about getting the guy you want, it's about friendship, in the end. Thanks, Kristina, that was fun! I haven't thought about some of those movies in ages!
ReplyDeletehaven't seen The Wedding Date, MJ, but will check it out. Pretty in Pink was on TV the other night and I happy sighed all the way through it. And I loves LAWKI...it may make it into my Top 5 list... ;)
DeleteI saw this on the SavvyAuthor's message list, and jumped over here just to plug my very favorite romcom PHILADELPHIA STORY, only to find great minds think alike and you have it listed as your #1 pick, too. I feel so validated . Good post! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJoanie
thanks for visiting, Joanie! I love PS - such a great film. :)
DeleteLate to the party, but my choices are:
ReplyDelete1. When Harry Met Sally
2. Notting Hill
and
3. The Proposal
But it was so hard to narrow it down to three :)
I know - isn't it hard to pick just 3 of anything?!? I loved Notting Hill, too. Who couldn't love that line - and I'm just a girl, standing in front of a guy and asking him to love her. Oh, sigh.
DeleteI have to watch Philadelphia story, but Fool's Gold did not make it for me, AT ALL. My top 3 are probably: My friend's wedding, Fool's Rush In, 50 first dates.
