Today On My Desk: A Bit of Inspiration

Every now and then I look at my desk and wonder...how did that get there? What was I using it for? And why did I not put it away?

Then, of course, I continue on about my day...and more things are added to the mess. I like my desk. I like it clean, but somehow I can concentrate more when it's a little messy. I'm hip-deep in a new project - one I can't wait to tell you guys about! - so the mess is...a little bigger than normal. Here are just a few of the things on my desk (that should probably be put away.

I'm newly obsessed with nail wraps. I've had a hate-hate relationship with nail polish for...all my life. It chips, it smears, it stinks. My niece introduced me to nail wraps, which have zero drying time and zero smearing and they last (without chipping) at least a week.

These are the wraps I'm going to do later today...what can I say, I'm in a polka-dot mood.

A red velvet cake scented candle. A) because it smells yummy and B) because I can't bake red velvet cake. Not deliciously, anyway.

Here's a little inspiration: my favorite Boyd's Bear broke, so I get to see the inspirational saying 'key to the future' along with seeing my favorite superheros pointing at me...and reminding me to get writing. Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America all pointing at me? Yeah, inspiration!

And one more piece of inspiration: I didn't get to hear Nora Roberts' talk at the RWA conference this year, and I was really bummed (yeah, I'll buy the MP3s at some point, I just haven't yet). BUT, my friend Jenna Rutland already has the MP3s and shared a little of what La Nora had to say. This particular statements have been in my head for a couple of weeks now, providing motivation and also helping me stay on track. Because it can be lonely writing all alone (even with
RadioMan and bebe right down the hall). And I'm the Queen of Distraction, as I think we may have covered before.

Here's what Nora had to say:

1. Stop whining and write.

2. Stop f*ing around and write.

3. Stop making excuses and write.

These are some of the writing rules she lives by...I figure if they're good enough for Nora, they're damn well good enough for me.

What about you? Have a great motivational saying you keep close? Share in the comments!

  1. Many years ago, an Intrigue author who was in our RWA group said, "Put your ass in the chair and write."

I've always lived by that quote.

  2. Mine is just the litany of "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." This does wear thin and get old after a period of time, but it also keeps you in that chair. :-) I love your nail wraps!

  3. great one, D'Ann! BIC (butt in chair) is a rule I live by!

Liz, I totally agree...we just have to keep moving forward!

I'll post a pic of my nails later. Love 'em!

  4. Love your post. And I didn't now about nail wraps. I'll have to check them out in the States. They probably have them here in Mexico, I just don't know where.
For me? I always ask myself, "How old do you want to be to be published?"

    1. LOL. I had to convince myself that didn't matter. And still doesn't. I'm 64, and if I quite writing, I'm still going to be 64, so...

    2. great point, Liz! Em, I think if writing calls to you...you follow it, no matter what your age.

I'm a new nail-wrap convert...so much simpler (and prettier) than painting!
